John 15: 1-8 – “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples.”
I still remember doing this during SMU CF and this lesson really impacted me a lot. Maybe it was due to Denash’s repeated emphasis on the phrase ‘for without Me you can do nothing’ and its really nothing like no thing. Having Jesus doesn’t add anything more to our already wonderful life. Having Jesus adds everything to our empty and zero life. All we are called to do is to abide in Him, Christ Jesus our Lord and to me, its something like knowing Him isn’t it.
Spending time with Him daily, really getting to know Him and remaining connected to Him and as we do this, we get to know Him better. Its like both relational and intimate; just wanting to spend more time with the person. As we abide in Him, we are told that we will bear fruit. Hence, maybe as we look into our own lives, are we bearing fruit? May we all truly be bearing fruit for Christ, preaching the gospel to all nations and to really go to proclaim the gospel to the lost because otherwise, we are cast out and thrown into fire. We become useless and our purpose isn’t carried out. Let us be purposeful and useful, abiding in the vine and bearing fruit as we are called to do!
