“He who does not know love does not know God, for God is love” – 1 John 4:8
What does it actually mean when the bible says “God is love”?
Well, we as mature, young adults have had our fair share of relationships. We have lived life long enough to have had at least experience “love” from our parents and friends and maybe even girlfriends/boyfriends. We have seen countless examples from the television of “love”. “Love” is a sweet word. “Love” makes us feel good. “Love” is best shown through physical intimacy/sex. Wrong!
And here comes my favorite verse in Romans 3:4, “Certainly Not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar…”
The world’s definition of love is a lie! It’s satanic! It’s wrong! Bible says that God is Love. How God exemplifies love for us is the true definition of love! Bible does not say that love is God. This means that we do not start with our own philosophical definition of love and then fit God in. We START with who God is! And from the character of God, we can then find out what love is. So now let’s find out what is REAL love.
Firstly, who is God? 🙂 God is… Trinity. God is one God, three persons. God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit, in 3 distinct persons, exemplify love, pure and true love, amongst the trinity. John 3:35 reads, “The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand” and later on in John 14:31, “But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here” When Jesus said that He loved the Father and the Father loves Him, He meant it! In John 17:24, Jesus talks to God the Father and He says “for you loved me before the foundation of the world”. Basically this means that from eternity past, the Trinity has lacked nothing and they shared perfect love.
Secondly, God’s love amongst the Trinity is perfect yet do you know that He loved us? Communally and individually!
Romans 5:5 says, “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” Amazing! Trinitarian love has come into us! DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOVED? They say that we need to be loved before we can show love to others and it’s true! DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOVED? God sent His Son to die for you! Go and read the gospels another time. Go and watch the passion of Christ or the gospel of John. It was not good for Jesus to come and die. It wasn’t His best interest to come down to earth to be mocked at by the ones he loved and killed by the ones He created.
DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE STILL LOVED? The God who died for you still loves you! He is doing this mainly through us (Christians). Yes, Christians on earth are not perfect but we love! Just look around the community and you can see Christians loving as God loves! Pastors preaching in love! AG/YD teachers teaching in love! Hospitality teams greeting you in love! Ministry staff workers ministering you in love! And the list goes on and on! I strongly suggest you reflect on this and think of a few concrete examples of how you are being loved all around you by disciples of Jesus.
