God is… Community!

By: Jerry Tan

Hi guys, as you all probably would have guessed, I am doing a “God is” series. Really interesting going into our Father’s nature and characteristics 🙂 Past 2 posts, I titled them “God is Trinity” and “God is Love”. This post’s title should actually be “God is Communal” but I thought the title “God is Community” has a better ring to it.

“And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” – Genesis 2:18

After God created the heavens and the earth, He saw that it was very good. However there was 1 thing that wasn’t good on earth before the fall of man. “It is not good that man should be alone”! To all the men out there, please do not quote this verse as a pick up line 🙂 the verse means that God created us in His image. He created us to be relational! We humans are all created in the image of God! We are God’s image-bearers! As image-bearers, we are created for relationship with God and men.

So where do we start to learn to be communal? How do we learn to be a community of God?

Come on… those who have been attending church for years should know that the answer to every question is “Jesus” 🙂 Yes, we start with knowing God.

Brought into communion with God

When it comes to building a community of God/ body of Christ, we need to start with being connected to the source! (John 15:5) We need to first of all be brought into communion with God! How? By the working of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus, to the Father!

Perichoresis is a Greek word which literally means “to dance around”. This word was used by the early church fathers to describe the relationship between the Trinity as it were a dance. Beautiful isn’t it? God the Trinity is active! He is moving! The relationship between the Trinity is as united and intimate as thought it were a dance. Now THAT is the kind of communion we are being brought into when we accept Jesus as Lord of our life. WE ARE BROUGHT INTO THE DANCE OF ETERNITY!

There is another Greek word that is used to describe the relationship between the Trinity. The word starts with a “C”. Whoever finds it out and is the first to mail (jerry_twist@hotmail.com) me the answer gets a prize!

Perfect in one

“I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.” – John 17:23

Bible tells us that the Trinity had full love before the foundation of the world. (John 17:24) Now that we are brought into communion with God, the true and living God, we are now one body of Christ. We are to be united! Paul tells the church in Corinth to be so united to the point where everyone should be saying the same thing! (1 Corinthians 1:10) How can that be so??? I believe it is possible! It is possible when we, God’s people, have the mind of Christ. The Holy Spirit that is in us is not divided! “”Is Christ divided?…” – 1Corinthians 1:13. To be united, we all need to acknowledge that Jesus is God and King of our lives and of the universal church. When we learn to rend our hearts (Joel 2:13), we will then learn to be perfect in one as Jesus had prayed for us.

Having the mind of Christ in us, loving others with Christ’s love, dancing together with the Lord of the dance. Isn’t that a beautiful image? Sorry, I’m sure there is so much more to the Topic of “God is Community” than what I’ve written. But for now do enjoy the song! 🙂
