“Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”, and again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise that they are futile” ” – 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
What is humility? I just googled the word “humility” and turns out that majority of the links that came to the top regarding the word “humility” are from Christian websites. Seems like humility is really linked to Christ eh…Surprised? Not really… because Jesus is humble, genuinely humble! So what is humility?
A wise young man once told me that “humility is not to think less of yourself but instead to think of yourself less.” I say true humility is not to think less of yourself but instead to think of yourself less and think of God more!
Last week I admitted to my sin of not being transparent. This week, let me admit to the sin behind that sin. I am proud. I am egoistic. Being transparent would hurt my ego and my pride and therefore I detest the idea of being a transparent person towards my peers.
But God, He is Humble. He is not proud. Jesus, who is God, who was enjoying the love of God from eternity past came into time, came to earth to be born a humble birth, to live a humble life, to die a VERY humbling death for the sins of His creation. During Jesus’s ministry on earth, He always always always looked towards God the Father for direction. He spoke the words the Father told Him. Basically He lived the life that God the Father had planned for Him. Jesus is humble. In the Trinity, there is never a time when people praised God the Father and God the Son was feeling jealous! There was never a time when people blessed the name of Jesus and God the Spirit would covet the glory. In fact our God is altogether one Triune God, one united community, one transparent God and one VERY humble God. From the relationship between our Triune God, we can learn so much from humility. God the Father loves humbly (John 3:16), Jesus lived-died-lived humbly (Philippians 2:6-7), The Spirit of God now works humbly in us, sanctification. (Romans 15:15-16). This is our gospel!
Face it guys, we are proud. “For all that is in the world-the lust of flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-is not of the Father but is of the world” – 1 John 2:16. We love the world and that means we are proud. If you don’t see it, you are proud. Personally I still think we don’t truly and fully know the extent of our pride and the extent of God’s love and humility yet. Let’s all keep praying to realize this more and more as we grow in the LORD.
Think about it guys, God is humble. If were not for the humility of God, we would all be dead, dead in our pride and dead in our sins, dead in the eyes of God. The world tells us that we need to think smart! God’s word tells us to be fools for Christ. I choose to be a fool for God, do you? 🙂
