Strangers No More

By: Calvin Lee

We were strangers

Starting Out on a journey

Never Dreaming

What we’d have to go through

Now here we are

And I’suddenly standing

At the beginning with you

Just like the Song Anastasia by Richard Marx and Donna Lewis – At the Beginning with you. I felt that life is a journey and I am only at the Beginning. For me I just started a new chapter of my life, in the arms of The Lord Jesus. For this stranger,  this Retreat brought  me nearer to this closed-knitted Zion family with a bunch of brothers and sisters of Christ.

The theme of the Retreat is to Live for Real which Han Teck, our Speaker, had been sharing with us that we have to know our identity in Christ. As for myself, I have not found  the true identity of me in Christ but this verse caught hold of my attention during his sharing “Now it is God who makes both of us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us” -2 Corinthians 1:21-22. I felt comforting as this verses says that I belongs to God.

During devotion time, Dev shared with us about finding the constancy in the influx of our daily Life. He shared with us on praying to the God and admitting that we are blind and we need God’s help to make his words to be parts of us. Dev also emphasised on having Brothers and Sisters of Christ to help us hold on to God’s message which we may have forgotten. He emphaised on a point Han Teck made earlier, where Christian finding going to Church bored.  This may happened if we do not open ourselves to others. We need to pray for help to share our life  to understand the fullness of the Gospel.

During the workshop Han Teck was sharing on Living Stones-a people belonging to God.  In the Bible, 1 Peter 1:22  says, “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply from the heart.” He were sharing with us on the importance of having a “Band of Brothers”.  I am person who like to watch movies I paid more attention to the parts where he illustrated with scenes from the movies. Han Teck was sharing  a part in the movie 300 where he mentioned about the Persian messenger who went to the Sparta demanding Leonidas to submit to King Xerxes. Leonidas refused and kicked the messenger into the pit. Leonidas strongly believed in his stone wall of 300 armies which would defeat the Persians.  Han Teck wanted us to also build a stone wall of 300 armies of brothers-in-Christ using Jesus as the “Capstone” which would help us sail through life adversities.

In the 2 days of the Retreat,  I do experienced the “The Fruit of Spirit” from my brother and sister of Christ. These attributes of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Gentleness, Goodness, Faithfulness,Meekness and Temperance can be felt beaming in them. The greatest reward in this Retreat was having somebody trusting in you and sharing their life with you. At the same time, also having a pair of listening ears who hears your sorrows and willing to pray for the goodness of the outcome for you. These kind of love and care was not present in most part of my life.
