A Prayer for the Nation

By: Elder David Leong

As today is Cooling Off Day, we should make this a day where we commit to the Lord the nation. Let’s seek the Lord, His will and His glory.

‘Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’

Reflecting on Genesis 19:29, God remembered the prayer of Abraham for the righteous in the city. A few lessons may be drawn, focusing on the relationship between Abraham and God:

1) Prayer does make a difference
2) People do matter to God
3) God is all powerful and He can override human actions
4) The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was not just for their sexual sin, but also their pride and arrogance in not taking care of the poor and the needy with their tremendous wealth (cf. Ezekiel 16:48-50)

A Prayer of Adoration (Psalms 47)

God Is the King of All the Earth

1 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. 2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. 3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet. 4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah. 5 God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. 7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. 8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness. 9 The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.
The Lord God is Creator, Sustainer, Saviour and King of the Nations!

A Prayer of Confession

The 2 casinos built and the contributing destruction of families and the robbing of the poor and vulnerable.
Pride (a sense that we are a self-made, self sufficient nation, forgetting God)
As a nation, we value everything and everyone in dollar and cents
The alarming rate of abortions (approx. 12,000 performed each year)
Rising number of divorces and increasing moral decline (even among Christians)
Children who are hurt or neglected by divorces or the economic / status pursuits of their parents
Believers’ values are no longer distinct than non-believers’
Exploitation of domestic helpers and foreign labourers (modern day slavery?) Not doing enough to take care of poor and needy amongst us

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

How the Lord has brought our nation thus far
Relative safe and security for people living in Singapore
Generally well governed with a strong emphasis on the rule of law
Relatively low unemployment and the provision of jobs
God using Singapore as the “Antioch of Asia” to bless the surrounding nations Christians who are or have given their lives to serve in the government and public sector

A Prayer of Supplication

Pray for Christians in our public square and civil administration that they will uphold God’s standards.
That God will continue to use our nation to bless others.
That God will establish His will through this General Election.
Politicians and parliamentarians will debate issues with civility and sobriety.
Voters will have the wisdom and discretion in their individual voting.
That the government, the courts and the civil service have just and righteous people with integrity to serve the nation.
That Christians in parliament be not consumed with power lest they forget that they are sent by God to serve the nation.
